Rwanda hosts the 9th National Dialogue on Media Development

On 7th November 2017, Rwanda hosts the 9th National Media Dialogue under the theme “Positioning African Media in the digital era”. This year the media dialogue coincides with the celebration of Africa Day of Information and the Annual Development Journalism Awards.

The event was organized by the Rwanda Governance Board in collaboration with other institutions underpinning media development which include; Media High Council (MHC), Rwanda Journalists Association (ARJ) and the Rwanda Media Commission (RMC) with UNDP support.

Addressing participants, Mr. Fode Ndiyaye , One UN Resident Coordinator in Rwanda, said that Media is one of the key drivers of achieving democracy, accountable governance and development. He added that Digital Era is not a threat but an opportunity to reach greater achievements. Media should be part of the cement of social cohesion"

Ms. Leslie Richer from African Union emphasized on the role that Media should play in helping Africa attain Agenda 2063.

During his welcome remarks, Prof. Anastase SHYAKA, the CEO of Rwanda Governance Board, said: "we are holding the National Media Dialogue because we believe in Dialogue to solve existing challenges”. He added that Media reforms in Rwanda have led to the growth of the media sector both in quality and in quantity.

While officiating the 9th National Media Dialogue on Media Development, Louise MUSHIKIWABO, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Cooperation and East African Community noted that Rwandan media has come “a long way” and she  reiterate the Government of Rwanda commitment to support media both in Rwanda and on the continent.

 Discussions during the Dialogue enhanced awareness about challenges faced by media entities in Africa in the digital age. And recommendations from the dialogue will help to mobilise efforts that will inform adequate policy formulation and advocacy in order to address these challenges.

The aforementioned event draw together local experts, researchers, investors, media managers and media practitioners.
