Journalists acquired skills on responsible election coverage.

Kigali, on 17th May 2017, The Media High Council in partnership with UNDP and in collaboration with Media Development partners including Rwanda National Electoral Commission (NEC) has conducted a training of journalists on pre– election procedures and democratic issues reporting, which held at Lemigo Hotel.

The National Electoral Commission informed the journalists the ongoing preparations of Rwanda’s presidential elections scheduled in August 2017.  They discussed also on their code of conduct during the electoral period.

The training aimed at equipping journalists with professional skills in pre-elections reporting. In addition, it will enable them to produce professional news stories during the Presidential Elections process in Rwanda.

While giving his remarks, Peacemaker MBUNGIRAMIHIGO, the Executive Secretary of the Media High Council (MHC), emphasized on the vital role of journalists in informing and educating the public about electoral process.“You have a big role of informing the public every step of elections process on time.” He said .He added that Rwandans need a profitable, vibrant and professional media which contribute in county development.

In his presentation, “The electoral process in Rwanda: state of preparation”, Mr. MUNYANEZA Charles, the Executive Secretary of National Electoral Commission(NEC) took participants through  Presidential elections modalities, Requirements for Presidential candidates, major  activities already undertaken by NEC, major election activities ahead in the elections calendar, challenges and the expected role of media practitioners in the electoral process.

Mr. Emmanuel Mugisha, the Executive Secretary of Rwanda Media Commission urged media practitioners to always dig deep and analyze issues before publication and provide fair and balanced information to the public.

The training drew together 32 journalists, 29 men and 3 women from different media houses, TV, Radio, Print and Online. As the training is practically oriented, the trainees will be deployed for 8 days in four Districts as follows: Rubavu, Nyabihu, Rulindo and Gakenke where they will produce professional news stories related to pre-elections process to be published in their respective media outlets.
