Female journalists trained on how to design fundable projects

The Media High Council (MHC) in Partnership with the United Nation Development Programme (UNDP), last week trained female media practitioners on how design fundable projects according to donors requirements and guidelines.

The training was held in Musanze District from 16-21 September 2019 and attended by 29 female journalists from different media houses operating in Rwanda.

During the 6 days of training, they were taken through how to come up with projects ideas, how to write proposals, concepts notes, and understanding what are the requirements and guidelines of donors.

The knowledge and skills they gained enabled them to come up with projects proposals aimed at tackling some of the human security issues in Rwanda via media.

Nyirahavugimana Cecile, a presenter at Radio Umucyo said that before attending the training, it was not even easy for her to come up with ideas that can generate a project.

“At present, i know that projects ideas come from what really passionate me, something that is going to have a significant impact on society and improve the livelihood of the community.” She said.

She added that with the guidance of MHC they are committed to finalize their projects proposals as soon as possible and start to look for donors who can sponsor them.

The trainees recommend MHC to organize another session of this training so that other women in media can have knowledge on how to design project that can be fundable thus increasing the number of female businesses in this sector.

The Executive Secretary of MHC, Peacemaker Mbungiramihigo, who said that their recommendation will be put into consideration, asked them to work hard by keeping in mind that it is only the beginning.

“We have to keep in mind that working hard is only the beginning and focus on working smart. On the other hand, it’s time to start thinking about how we can be employed by others and invest in our own businesses.” He said.

Mbungiramihigo emphasized on the need to come up with projects that are innovative and can bring change in their lives and Rwanda’s development in general.

Figures from Rwanda Media Commission, a media self-regulatory body, show that among them 1026 accredited journalists in Rwanda only 244 are female.

Among 176 media owners, only 21 are female, this highlights the need for building their capacity in designing projects and building their confidence.
