After a 4 day training on Gender equality organized by the Media High Council (MHC) in partnership with The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), Media Managers committed to starting hiring journalists based on their competencies instead of assuming that female are not suitable for the job.
The training of Media Managers on Gender Equality was held from 16-19 September at Centre Notre Dame de Fatima in Musanze District and attended by 29 managers of different media houses operating in Rwanda.
Trainers shade more light on Gender equality and how it differs from gender equity; gender harassment, especially in media and they were able to hear testimony from Akimana Latifah, one of the experienced female journalists, who proved to them that women too can compete with men if they get equal opportunities.
Hagengimana Philbert, a manager at imvano.rw committed to hiring and giving equal opportunities to both male and female journalists based on their competencies.
“This training shed more light on gender equality and the importance of employing female journalists. I commit to give equal opportunities to both female and male journalists and measure their competencies based on their capacity to deliver not their gender.”
This was also a commitment for many media managers, who said that they will establish policies that will make it easier for people to report gender harassment in their respective media houses.
Delivering his closing remarks, the Executive Secretary of MHC, Peacemaker Mbungiramihigo, said that for gender equality to be achieved especially in workplaces, managers should be on the helm of this campaign.
“It’s possible to achieve gender equality, but you as leaders and managers you have to believe in this policy established by our government. We have to be the pioneer of the change we want to see in our media”.
According to latest statistics from the Rwanda Media Commission, among the accredited journalists in Rwanda, only 244 are women while 782 are men.
