China Embassy donates laptops to Media High Council

The Embassy of the People's Republic of China to Rwanda last week donated laptops to the Rwanda Media High Council, in a bid to support the development and capacity building of the media industry.

The laptops were handed to the Executive Secretary of the Media High Council, Peacemaker Mbungiramihigo by the Political Counselor in the Embassy of China, Xing Yuchun.

In her remarks, Yuchun observed that the donation aims to show the will of The Embassy of the People's Republic of China to Rwanda in contributing to the capacity Building and development of the media sector in Rwanda.

“Before, we used to partner with media houses directly, but now we wish to support the media development through the Media High Council, which is responsible for media capacity building. We will look into their plans, and strategies to see how our support can be further given where needed.” She added.

The Executive Secretary of The Media High Council, Peacemaker Mbungiramihigo, said that the People's Republic of China has been supporting different media houses and journalists through grants, scholarships, and other initiatives. He added that the Media High Council appreciated the donation and that in the near future, the Chinese Embassy will be among other partners that contribute greatly to the development of Media in Rwanda.

“The laptops you gave us will greatly contribute to the development and capacity building of the Media industry in Rwanda. We are ready to work hand in hand so that you can know where your support can be directed”, he concluded.

The Media High Council was established in 2002 and was further given a new mandate of capacity building towards Media in 2013. This is done through a collaboration with several institutions, so to mobilize the necessary resources that facilitate training for journalists, advocating for the media, and enhancing the capacity of the sector as a whole.
